- you will understand what the current capabilities of CALL systems are, and the potential for making further improvements.

The aim of this course is to show how and to what extent advanced CALL systems can be used to help people acquire language skills and to conduct research on language learning. Topics covered are assessment, language input, language output, elicitation, error detection and feedback. Special attention will be paid to the use of CALL systems for oral proficiency and to various techniques for providing corrective feedback, including their effectiveness and their feasibility in CALL environments. You will discover that CALL requires a multi-disciplinary approach which combines knowledge and expertise from different fields such as language acquisition, language learning, pedagogy, system design, ergonomics, ICT and HLT.
A technical, ICT background is not required for this course. This course is suitable for every (e.g. linguistics) student with an interest in, and positive attitude to using computers for language learning.
