This course focuses on the language and interaction patterns of child and adult users of Sign Language of the Netherlands. In week 7-14 you will be carrying out your own investigation based on corpus data of adult signers or of parent-child interactions. To prepare for that and stimulate your thinking about novel research questions that can be answered with such data, in week 1-6 we will discuss six areas of study based on the scientific literature. These six themes each link directly to some core differences between signed and spoken languages: the modality difference (including rich simultaneity), different acquisition patterns, and language contact with a spoken language.
The first part of the course will be concluded and evaluated by submitting a research proposal that can be carried out in the second part of the course. The second part of the evaluation will be based on the participation in the project meetings and the final report on your study.
