Aan het eind van deze cursus is de student in staat om:
- de psychometrische kwaliteiten van een taaltoets te evalueren;
- testtaken te construeren en evalueren voor een verschillende soorten taaltests;
- te beslissen welke tests geschikt zijn voor welke contexten;
- grondig kennis te gebruiken bij afwegingen over de inzet van taaltests, zoals authenticiteit, directheid, betrouwbaarheid, testspecificaties, validiteit en terugslageffecten.
At the end of this course, the student will be able to:
- evaluate the psychometric qualities of a language test;
- construct and evaluate test tasks for a variety of language tests;
- decide which kind of tests are suited for which contexts;
- demonstrate a thorough understanding of a variety of language test considerations, like authenticity, directness, reliability, test specifications, validity, and washback.

Taaltests worden op grote schaal gebruikt om taalvaardigheid (luisteren, spreken, schrijven, lezen), taalkennis en taalprestaties te beoordelen, in diverse contexten (school, universiteit, werk, immigratie, burgerschap en asiel). Succesvol talen leren is essentieel in de moderne samenleving en testresultaten zijn cruciaal om toegang te krijgen tot (verdere) beroeps- en onderwijskansen. Dit betekent dat we moeten begrijpen hoe toetsen worden geconstrueerd, hoe we zelf toetsen kunnen construeren en hoe we kunnen vaststellen of bepaalde toetsen betrouwbaar en valide zijn. Wat testen we en hoe testen we het?
We bespreken de praktijk, (taal)testtheorie, statistiek/psychometrie en ethiek van (het construeren van) taaltoetsen, met name op het gebied van tweedetaalverwerving. Tot slot worden statistische analyses gebruikt om de psychometrische eigenschappen van taaltoetsen te evalueren.
Language tests are widely and abundantly in use to assess language proficiency skills (listening, speaking, writing, reading), language knowledge and language achievements, in many contexts (school, college, university context; workplace; in immigration, citizenship and asylum contexts). Successful language learning is essential in modern society, and test results are crucial in getting access to (further) professional and educational opportunities. This means that we need to understand how tests are being constructed, how we can construct tests ourselves, and how we can determine whether particular tests are reliable and valid. What do we test, and how do we test it?
We will discuss practice, (language) testing theory, statistics/psychometrics and ethics of (constructing) language tests, esp. in the field of second language acquisition. Finally, statistical analysis will be used to evaluate the psychometric properties of language tests.
