Course goals
The Academic Skills (AS) programme is intended to enable you to acquire the various skills needed to function at a scholarly level both during your university studies and your chosen career afterwards. These skills relate to:
- Posing relevant academic questions
- Collecting academically sound information, both written and oral
- Processing academic information
- Drawing academically sound conclusions, or reasoning at an academic level
- Presenting the results of scholarly activities, both written and oral.

In this course you have to write and present the first two chapters of an academic paper. The first chapter contains the introduction, the second chapter provides a theoretical overview of the subject that you study. To reach this goal, you have to make several assignments and participate actively in class. For many tasks we apply the principles of 'learning by writing'. What counts is that - by writing - you gain insights and delve into the material. Most assignments and tasks in this course are "open assignments" that stimulate or challenge you to research a subject more deeply. They do not aim at finding a correct answer or a single solution (which is the case with "closed assignments"). In other words, you are expected to take the initiative to delve into a subject and to take your thought process to a deeper level. Therefore, the tasks and assignments do not always identify what you need to do exactly and how you should do it. In this type of situation, you have to introduce structure yourself and develop a plan of attack. You have to learn to define your own assignments. In this course we practice these types of skills, and you will have to demonstrate that you are capable of using these skills. The Academic Skills course is intended to make your academic potential come to life, to show what you are capable of. And, when working on an assignment or when in a workgroup session, you must learn to take the initiative rather than waiting to see what others may say or do. |
