Cursusdoelen
The course Academic Skills mathematics and statistics is aimed at acquiring and practicing a number of economic-scientific skills. These are necessary to successfully complete the Masters in Economics at this faculty and to function as an academically trained economist in professional practice after completing the study.

The Academic Skills part of the course focuses on (among other things) the following skills:
  • Ask relevant scientific questions
  • Collect relevant, written, scientifically justified information
  • Draw scientifically justified conclusions, scientifically justified reasoning and argumentation
Goals w.r.t. the mathematics and statistics part of the course:
  • Maximize and minimize functions of one variable
  • Maximize and minimize functions of 2 variables
  • Maximize and minimize functions of two variables under one constraint
Goals w.r.t. the mathematics and statistics part of the course:
  • Being able to make calculations with probability distributions
  • To be able to calculate the expected value, the variance, the covariance and the correlation coefficient
  • Performing and analyzing regression analyzes in "R"
Inhoud
In the Academic Skills part of the course (AS), students acquire skills that you need to become a good academic during your studies and to be able to function well as an academic after your studies. The skills you acquire are:
To develop relevant scientific questions;
To collect relevant scientific information;
To analyze scientific information and draw conclusions ;

To become a good economist, students must have basic knowledge of Mathematics and Statistics. In addition, the role that mathematics plays during your study will discussed. Extensive consideration will be given to differentiating functions of one and more variables. In addition, maximizing and minimizing functions plays an important role. We will look in more detail at different methods that can be applied to calculating maxima and minima from functions of two variables under one constraint. Further more we will also pay attention to integrals.

In the field of statistics, the student needs basic knowledge to be well prepared for the follow-up course in which linear regression analysis is discussed. The statistics part of the course consists of two parts: statistics in theory and practice and working with "R". During the first statistical part, students must be able to do calculations with the normal distribution. Students must also have knowledge of the concepts (and make calculations) expected value, variance, covariance and the correlation coefficient. During the part working with "R", regression analysis will be discussed in which cross sectional data from different countries is analyzed with the aid of the computer (program "R"). Basic knowledge gained during this part consists of: Having knowledge of descriptive statistics, have skills and knowledge of the operation of program "R", in which regression analysis are going to be discussed.

GRADE:
- You have to pass the Academic Skills part of the course, otherwise no final mark for the entire course can be given.
- 50% Mathematical EXAM (2 hours)
- 50% Mathematical and Statistical assignments

Toetsinformatie
For the Academic Skills part students will receive a pass/ fail. Partial grades of the Academic Skills part remain valid.
Written mathemtical exam (50%) and results of several mathematical and statistical assignments (50%). The written exam will take place by using the program SOWISO. Partial grades from previous years will not remain valid.
