This course offers an overview of the core concepts and debates in relation to gender in organizations. This research domain is positioned on the intersection of organization studies and gender studies. Generally, organization studies pay too little attention to positions of men and women and the gendered distribution of work in organizations. In this course, we will gain an understanding of the dynamic of the gender distinction in organizations by combining insights and concepts from both gender studies and organization studies. In doing so, we will adopt a critical perspective in order to reconstruct both the mode of appearance and the meanings of gender in organizations. The course offers an analytical framework to map the complex processes forming the basis for the (re)production of gender distinction in organizations. Central to this analytical framework is the mutual influence of a) the interplay between the organization’s structure and culture and b) the way in which organizational members identify themselves and others. The focus will be on identifying different modes of appearance of the gender distinction, on the meaning of the gender distinction for organizational practices, and on organizational processes reproducing the gender distinction. Important topics are, for instance, informal organizational processes, work-life balance, gender and leadership, multiple masculinities and intersectionality. |
