Aims
After completing the course International Management the student is able to:
  • explain the drivers of international business activity (K)
  • ground differences in competitive advantage in relevant theoretical frameworks (C, K)
  • assess strategies in different market contexts (P)
  • undertake country analysis and make informed investment decisions in particular institutional settings
Content
In an ever-broadening set of interdependent relationships among countries, the need to recognise the opportunities and restrictions presented by different world markets has gained significance. This course is designed to impart the analytical skills to
  1. understand the challenges and issues related to the management of multinational enterprises (MNEs),
  2. analyse the ways in which MNEs can respond to these challenges on the basis of external opportunities and internal capabilities, and
  3. understand the implications of these responses for performance.
The course is designed with the rationale that you as a manager will be expected to analyse business environments in different countries to attain company success.

There will be two or three required academic articles to read for each lecture. The links to these will be provided on Brightspace.

Lecture

General
The teaching and learning strategy is designed to introduce theories and tools to assess the opportunities of and challenges to operating as a multinational and formulate evidence-based strategies for international competitiveness. You are expected to undertake regular reading of the topics discussed during each session. The course is composed of 12 lectures, one case analysis session, and two consultation sessions about the international management (IM) project.

Attendance is not mandatory, but the intensive nature of the course requires regular reading and class participation.

The IM project will be carried out in groups of six on a real-life company’s IM concern, specifically which business risks a company would need to factor into its strategy formulation in different countries. The teaching and learning methods will be supported by Brightspace where lecture material and other relevant information on the course will be made available.
