Cursusdoelen
In this course students will:

● Make an active exercise of critical thinking by listening and reflecting on the experiences of practitioners and academics, using a diverse set of support materials as academic and non-academic texts, videos, films and other artistic expressions.
● Collectively and individually reflect on a number of key debates about postcolonial and decolonial streams of thought.
● Critically engage with and position themselves in relation to these interdisciplinary theoretical perspectives.
● Be able to identify some key issues concerning knowledge production and scientific/academic work by discussing the implications of these theoretical debates for the analysis of social life, power, difference, inequality and social justice.
● Demonstrate a creative ability to apply postcolonial / decolonial thinking to their own field of inquiry and push the theoretical and methodological debates in their own disciplines.
● Students are able to discuss how these scientific and social debates apply to their own lives and surroundings, not only within European societies but also in relation with societies from the Global South and Global North.

Inhoud

This course sets a dialogue between postcolonial and decolonial thinking from various interdisciplinary angles, combining theoretical and practical reflections framed in public issues on the ground. We feel as necessary to make an effort and bridge the experiences of people working outside the academic circuits and young researchers, in order to question the dominant academic practices and theoretical elaborations in social sciences. It is most certainly our responsibility to give room for the discussion and further recognition of the colonial historicity behind the processes of scientific/academic knowledge production. A common ground to depart from is the fact that both postcolonial and decolonial thinkers have addressed the necessity for a critical conception of scientific knowledge, and its detachment from the Eurocentric academic models. It is precisely at the intersection of knowledge production, scientific practice, modern significations and colonial power relations where our dialogue could bridge these streams of thought towards the reconfiguration of European aulas as critical academic spaces. We aim to open a safe(r) space in which advanced bachelor and master students engage in contemporary debates in the social sciences by the hand of the experiences from guest practitioners situated in different geographies and articulated to different social contexts. Through a critical and collective reflection we aim to experience an encounter that helps us better understand postcolonial and decolonial arguments in relation to our own daily lives but also at a time when we are reshaping the dynamics of the (virtual/presential) aula of Radboud University.

Themes of discussion.

- Multiple Modernities versus Modernity/Coloniality.
- Geopolitics of knowledge production.
- Violence. Human/Not-Yet Human.
- Race/Gender/Sexuality.
