Cursusdoelen
After completing this course, students will
  • understand the main approaches to conflict management and which approach is most suited during which conflict stage
  • be familiar with the main academic debates about each of these conflict management strategies
  • recognise the different conflict management approaches in contemporary conflict cases
  • be able to apply the theoretical debates discussed in the course to a conflict case
  • be able to understand the policy implications of these debates and to develop policy advice on conflict management
Inhoud
This course introduces students to various approaches to, and academic debates about, the management of large-scale violent conflict (or war). It discusses how policies and interventions to deal with violent conflict evolve as a result of the changing nature of conflicts and of ongoing discussions about the effectiveness of interventions. Approaches to conflict management discussed include conflict prevention; peacemaking or the (mediated) negotiation of peace agreements; peacekeeping or military intervention to protect a population or guarantee a ceasefire; and peacebuilding, which seeks to rebuild relations and transform societies to maintain peace. These approaches will be linked to the main actors engaging in conflict management, such as international organisations, states, civil society, and local citizens. Furthermore, the course pays attention to important conflict management debates, particularly in relation to peace interventions. What extent of societal transformation can intervention achieve? Is it sometimes better not to intervene? How can interveners avoid imposing blueprint solutions in a top-down fashion? Students will apply these debates to a contemporary conflict case, developing advice for policy makers on how best to deal with it.
