Inhoud

Project: European Integration in a Globalising Economy starts with a number of lectures that will provide a theoretical background for several policy issues within the European Union. Theoretical insights will be presented on the following topics:

  • History, institutions, and political aspects
  • The economics of preferential trade liberalisation
  • Optimum Currency Area and the EMU
  • Welfare and income distribution effects of free movement of goods, capital and labour
  • Location factors and regional policy
  • Integration and competitiveness

The introductory component concludes with an oral exam (at the end of block 3).
After insights into these issues have been presented, groups of 3-4 students will choose a policy-relevant problem that is related to the European Union for further research. The assignment consists of two parts:

  1. A thorough theoretical analysis of factors that might explain the problem. This analysis should result in a regression model that is used to do research on the policy problem chosen and that could help find solutions to the problem.
  2. A presentation of the policy proposals aimed at how to solve the selected problem. The findings of the quantitative analysis should be taken into account in the argumentation of the choice of policy proposals to tackle the problem.

In a final conference, each policy proposal will be presented and discussed for and with the entire group (at the end of block 4). A mandatory one-day excursion to the European Institutions in Brussels is also part of the programme.
