Cursusdoelen
After completion of the course, you will:

  1. Have improved your ability to formulate a clear and scientifically relevant research question
  2. Have improved your ability process information by reviewing scientific literature, and selecting and explain relevant theories
  3. Have improved your ability to develop an analytical-deductive argument by deducing testable hypotheses from theories via the clarification of the mechanism(s) that follow from theoretical assumptions
  4. Gained experience in selecting and preparing relevant statistical data
  5. Have improved your ability to apply research methods in the context of theory-testing research by empirically testing hypotheses using regression methods
  6. Further developed a critical and reflective scientific attitude
  7. Gained experience with working as part of a team
  8. Have improved your ability to requests and effectively implement feedback and criticism
  9. Have improved your ability to communicate about scientific research in writing (paper) and orally (presentation)
Inhoud

The best way of learning statistics, is doing statistical research! In this course, you carry out, as a group, a complete statistical research project from scratch. You will select a relevant research question that is (broadly) related to the topic of democracy and/or representation. The themes discussed in the courses ‘Comparative Politics: Democratisation’ and/or ‘Political Parties, Origins, Transformations and Future Prospects’ will serve as a guidance for potential research questions. You will systematically review the scientific literature relevant to your specific research question, and select explanatory theories that can potentially help you to answer your research question. You will then deduce specific hypotheses from these theories and test them using the methods you have learned in the course ‘Political Science Research Methods II’ (linear or logistic multiple regression analysis). The course will result in a research paper, which you will also orally present and discuss.

Niveau
Intermediate
Voorkennis
Students need to have an intermediate knowledge of statistics, in particular on the theory, application and limitation of linear and logistic regression methods. This presumed foreknowledge is in particular covered in the course´Political Science Research Methods II' (taught concurrently with this course), which students need to actively participate in. Students also need to have some knowledge about the logic of explanatory theories in political science in general, and in particular explanatory theories in the field of Comparative Politics. Students are hence expected to follow the course 'Comparative Politics: Democratisation' (also taught concurrently with this course), and it is recommend that they should also have taken the course ‘Political Parties, Origins, Transformations and Future Prospects'.

Toetsinformatie
Research paper and participation requirement. Research paper is graded on the standard 1-10 scale. Final grades >=5.5 are required to pass the course. Submission of intermediate assignments, and active participation in all activities and meetings are mandatory. The participation requirement is graded either 'pass' or 'fail'. For students that pass the participation requirement, the grade for the research paper is also the final grade. Students that fail the participation requirement will receive 'fail' as a final grade, and hence do not pass the course.
