Cursusdoelen
The course enables students to gain knowledge about, to apply, and to reflect on systems thinking and system dynamics as analytical methods to support decision making in complex, multi-value managerial situations. The strategic decisions which are dealt with in the course typically address so-called messy problems that are complex in an analytical (many interrelated variables), dynamic (many changes over time), and a social sense (many different viewpoints on what the problem is). In order to analyse these problems, systems thinking and system dynamics modelling are presented as scientific approaches to improve decision making.

Inhoud

Decision makers in companies have become aware that pursuing the single goal of making profit will no longer be a guarantee for economic prosperity and social acceptance in the future. While the generation of reasonable profits will continue to be a necessity, companies are also required to show that they are aresponsible organisation. In this course, we understand responsible organising as creating value in multiple other fields, rather than striving for profit maximization only. Among such other values are environmental sustainability, personnel development, societal relevance, and employment opportunities. These values encompass the whole range of possible interactions of an organisation with its environment.
Responsible organising is complex, because pursuing multiple values creates additional complexity in management which often lead to negative consequences when based on intuition alone. Furthermore, although numerous decisions are made each day, members of organisations are not necessarily committed to them because the decision-making process has not been carried out in a responsible manner. Thus, responsible organising is also about creating commitment to strategic decisions, a prerequisite for the effectiveness of the strategies intended. With the use of suitable methodologies and techniques such as visualisation, modelling, and simulation analyses, the capabilities of managers and policy makers to deal with multi-value situations can be increased and their intuitive power be strengthened. At the same time, understanding of and commitment to these decisions can be improved in organisations.
The course continues for the entire semester.
