Aims

After completing the course, students are able to:

  • understand and critically assess the core debates and theoretical literature relevant to the subject of the course.
  • discuss and critically analyse current and past efforts by the international community to mitigate conflict through international development.
  • apply and adapt the acquired practical and theoretical knowledge to contemporary events.
Content

In this course, we will consider the role of development processes and actors in conflict - both in the mitigation of conflict and as a source of conflict themselves. Particular attention will be paid to the various ways economic development may exacerbate, or indeed cause, conflict. The course will examine the historical legacy of development initiatives and foreign direct investment, as well as contemporary phenomenon such as 'land grabs' and conflict minerals. The course will also consider how various types of aid and foreign aid donors affect various stages of the conflict cycle, asking questions such as: can foreign aid exacerbate underlying conflict? Is foreign aid an effective tool of conflict prevention, management and/ or resolution? The course will combine lectures and activities in small groups.

This course is an elective for the Master's programmes 'Conflicts, Territories and Identities' and 'Conflict, Power and Politics'.
