Globalization and internationalization processes have had a major impact on business in recent decades. Of all the functional areas within companies, Human Resource Management has been an area that has dramatically changed in this period. In a global context, the management of human resources is more complex than in a purely national context, and yet effectively managing their human resources is essential for a successful MNE.
The broader focus of this course is on the human resource management in the international environment. This course aims to provide knowledge about and understanding of the key theories and practices of international HRM. Moreover, the course is developed along the line of the focal dilemmas, discussions and perspectives within international HRM.
For example, one of the important dilemmas for an MNE is finding a balance between standardizing its HRM policies and practices or adapting them to local demands. This dilemma can be related to the discussion of converging vs. diverging trends with regard to HRM practices. Second, because the role of culture and cultural differences is recognized as essential for MNEs, the influence of national culture on HRM policies and practices will be part of the study. Another influential factor affecting HRM concerns institutions such as governments (via labour legislation), trade unions and employers' associations (negotiations on working conditions) and supranational institutions, such as the European Commission and the International Labour Organization.
During the course, attention will also be paid to specific research methodologies in international HRM research.
Teaching method
The course consists of lectures by the HRM staff and guest lecturers. The course material is studied and applied in greater depth through group and individual assignments.
