Aims
  • Students will be able to formulate the objectives, approaches and methods of placemaking and mention (un)successful examples;
  • Students will understand a variety of theories, concepts and insights of placemaking and be able to apply them to concrete cases;
  • Students will be able to relate the results of placemaking research to local policies and report on them in a professional manner.
Content
This course explores placemaking as a useful approach to develop streets, neighborhoods, districts and other public spaces (e.g. aiports, stations and campuses) into inviting areas for place users. Typically, placemaking is a collaborative process to strengthen the link between people and places. As such, it deals with physical, social and cultural identities that are rooted in a particular place. Students who follow this course will be introduced in relevant theories, concepts, methodologies and case studies on placemaking and spatial practice. Part of the course is a 'placemaking lab' in which students work and report on a reallife project of placemaking in the Netherlands. In addition to lectures on the theory and the methodolody there are guest lectures and lectures in which students present group work on behalf of the rest of the group.
