Cursusdoelen
The main objectives of this module are:

After completion of the course, students are able to
  1. Define what big data is and explain the different dimensions of big data
  2. Explain how big data transforms biomedical research and healthcare
  3. Apply methods for big data analysis on biomedical data
  4. Evaluate and interpret results of a big data analysis
  5. Design a big data study
Inhoud
The module

This module will introduce students to concepts, methods and applications of big data in biomedical research and healthcare. With advances in -omics technologies (e.g., genomics, proteomics, metabolomics), imaging (from microscopic images to full-body scans), user-generated data (apps, wearables) and public health data, a tremendous and fast growing amount of data related to biology and health is being generated. The amount of data available is not only increasing in volume, but also in variety and velocity (the frequency of data that is produced, processed and analyzed). This asks for a rethinking of study designs, and new methods for data collection, analysis, interpretation and visualization in order to be able contribute to an increased understanding of biology and the improvement of healthcare. This module aims at providing an insight into and a hands on experience in the collection and analysis of big data, and its applications in biomedical research and healthcare.
