You can collect and generate relevant and functional biomedical knowledge concerning problems of health and disease based on scientific research:
  1. You are able to explain how the process of scientific thinking works.
  2. You are able to formulate a research question and articulate how this question can be empirically examined.
  3. You can can describe various methods for collecting data in humans. 
  4. You know how to find relevant literature and use this to write a summary with references.
  5. You can describe and use measures of disease frequency and measures of association.
  6. You know how to design, execute and interpret patient- and population based studies concerning diagnoses, etiology, prevention, prognosis and medical interventions.
  7. You can design a study on pregnancy outcome.
  8. You can distinguish different sources of bias in population research and can reflect upon causality.
  9. You can adequately describe and interpret the results from a study in numbers and graphs (descriptive statistics).
  10. You can quantify the amount of uncertainty present in results from an empirical study and/or draw valid conclusions about hypotheses (inferential statistics).
  11. You can use the program SPSS to do statistical analyses by yourself.
  12. You can build a setup to record electrophysiological signals, and you can subsequently record and analyse these signals.
  13. You can build and use models to study dynamic biomedical processes, and to make predictions based on these models.
  14. You can explain and apply some basic ethical principles (informed consent, integrity, soft impacts) that are relevant in biomedical research.
  15. You can write a short research report concerning cancer etiology or prognosis.
Inhoud
In the minor Biomedical Research Methods you will learn how scientific research is performed. You will learn methods to set up research by yourself and methods to find information concerning research others have been doing. You will also learn how to communicate research results.
