Aims
After this course you will be able to:
  • Mention different techniques to study genomes and apply these in plant breeding
  • Distinguish different types of molecular markers and explain how to use them in map-based cloning efforts
  • Distinguish QTL mapping and genome-wide association mapping
  • Discuss techniques used in plant breeding to improve crop performance
  • Present a brief lecture with a small group of fellow students
  • Search public databases on the internet for information on the mutants and molecular markers you need during the practical laboratory course
  • Design experiments to identify the chromosomal location of genes responsible for two given mutations by map-based cloning
  • Present your experiments in the form of a report written in the format of a scientific article
Content
The course provides an introduction to plant breeding. During this course you will focus on the question: How is genomics being used in current plant breeding efforts?
