Cursusdoelen
After successfully completing the course the student…
  1. …can describe and annotate the histology of the major human endocrine glands.
  2. …can schematically describe the synthesis and signaling pathways of peptide, steroid and amine hormones.
  3. …can schematically display stimulus-response schemes consisting of the stimuli for hormone release, target cells’ response and feedback of the major human hormone systems.
  4. …can use the histology and schematic displays mentioned under 1, 2 and 3 to explain simple clinical cases (pathologies, diagnostics, and therapies).
  5. … collect and categorise information obtained from different sources (lectures, labs, textbooks, review papers, internet) and write this up in their own words.
  6. …critically read and review colleagues’ written work.
Inhoud
The course Endocrinology is an intensive one and requires active participation.

The course is aimed at students reading Medical Biology and students reading Biology who have an interest in (human) physiology and endocrinology.

Students write a personal "mini-syllabus" and design posters of the lecture's topics. This will not only aid to understand endocrinological notions and concepts, but also train general academic competencies such as integrating and structuring information from different sources.

Colleagues from the Radboudumc contribute to the course, delivering their expertise and current developments in their discipline.

The course programme typically contains the following topics:
  • Mechanisms of hormone action, regulatory systems
  • Histology of endocrine glands
  • Adrenal hormones (steroids, catecholamines)
  • Thyroid gland and thyroid hormnes
  • The endocrine pancreas and diabetes
  • Female and male reproductive endocrinology
  • Calcitropic hormones and osteoporosis
  • Growth and the growth hormone system
  • Endocrinology of the digestive tract
  • Hormones and tumours
Instructional modes
  • Lecture
  • Lab class
  • Virtual (computer) lab class
  • Self-study
Niveau

Voorkennis
Basic knowledge of molecular biology, cell biology and animal physiology acquired during the preceding courses in the general phase.
Toetsinformatie
  • Written examination (use of the personal syllabus is permitted during the exam).
  • Final version of the syllabus needs to be submitted in order to pass the course.
Bijzonderheden
Dedicated self study to maintain and update the personal mini-syllabus. Given the high pace and the importance of self study in this course, it is mandatory to keep up with the study materials at all times. The personal syllabus is allowed as reference during the final exam.
Verplicht materiaal
Digitale leeromgeving (Brightspace)
Handouts van de colleges worden, indien mogelijk, via beschikbaar gemaakt. De belangrijkste literatuur wordt echter gevormd door de persoonlijke mini-syllabus die studenten schrijven.
