| | | | | | At the end of the course the student can:
- describe the normal structure and function of the kidney from the perspective of the homeostasis of the body
- Describe by which processes the regulation of the ion and water homeostasis in the human body are realized
- describe the proteins which play an important role in the regulation of ion and water homeostasis
- understand how mutations in these proteins lead to diseases
- understand the mechanisms by which therapies relieve these diseases

The ability of animals and humans to live is directly related to the developed ability to independently control the availability of ions, water and nutrients from the environment, despite continuous changes. The kidney is the main organ for the regulation of ion and water homeostasis. For this, kidney epithelial cells integrate environmental signals resulting in activation or inactivation of specific channel and transporter proteins. Errors in such proteins lead to diseases such as hypertension, diabetes insipidus, and kidney stones.
Within the Radboud University Medical Center, high quality research in both basic and clinical aspects of these homeostatic regulations in health and disease is performed. In this course "pathophysiology of the kidney', the student becomes familiar with these processes ' from molecule to man’. The student will become acquainted with the occurrence and importance of the cellular membrane potential for the ability of the cell to transport ions and water, and the role of key- proteins herein. It will be clear to the students that this serves as the basis for the understanding of the mechanisms by which the different segments of the kidney maintain the regulation of the ion and water homeostasis of our body as an integrated whole.
With the obtained knowledge, the student will be able to understand diseases caused by mutations in proteins involved the regulation of the ion and water homeostasis, and understand the mechanism of therapies for these diseases. By means of lectures, self-study assignments, practical sessions and lecture responses, the above will be made clear. In addition, through group activities, the students will apply the material studied on clinical cases and try to explain and understand their disturbances in the homeostatic regulation.
