Aims
The goal of this the course Neural Basis of Cognition and Perception is to provide an insight into the basic neural processes that underly cognition (e.g. memory, attention, decision-making, etc) and perception (e.g visual, auditory, somatosensory, vestibular systems)
Content
The course consists of lectures, response lectures, computer practical, demonstrations, writing an essay, selfstudy and presentations.

The content of the course is based on the book Kandel "Principles of Neural Science" (edition 5), on the chapters 15-32 and chapter 40

In the course the following items will be discussed:

- Organization of the central nervous system
- The functional organizatio of perception
- From nerve cells to cognition, the internal representation of space
- The organization of cognition
- Cognitive functions of premotor cortex
- Functional imaging of cognition
- Sensory coding
- The somatosensory system: receptors and central pathways
- Touch
- Pain
- Visual processing
- Retina
- Intermediate and high levels of visual processing
- The inner ear
- The auditory CNS
- Smell and taste
- Vestibular system
