Your review article will help you to reach the following learning outcomes of the (Medical) Biology master program:
- Capable of formulating new questions and hypotheses in the biological/biomedical field, and familiar with the research methods and state-of-the-art techniques to solve them, taking into account available equipment and resources;
- Capable of independently identifying, critically reading and comprehending relevant, up-to date international literature from different disciplines, of discriminating essential from nonessential information, and of integrating new information in his overall view on nature;
- Capable of using concepts from different organization levels in biology, in combination with those from physics, chemistry and mathematics, to solve a complex biological/ biomedical problem at a specific abstraction level;
- Capable of writing down the results of a research project in the form of a master thesis, in accordance with the standards of an academic article;
- Capable of independent professional practice whereby, depending on the chosen variant, the emphasis is put on conducting fundamental scientific research (under supervision), or on transferring or applying existing scientific knowledge, thereby taking into account his own competences;
- Capable of defending his view and of critically evaluating other views in a scientific discussion.

In the review article, you will define and investigate a specific question or hypothesis related to your master’s specialisation on the basis of original scientific articles.
When writing your review you will write an outline, a first version of the review, a final version of the review and a rebuttal to the comments of your supervisor. In principle, the review article has to be written during a four week, full-time period. You will have four moments of contact, either in person or via mail.
During your first moment of contact:
- You agree on supervision;
- You agree on a deadline for the outline;
- You plan your second moment of contact.
During the second moment of contact:
- You discuss the outline;
- You discuss the grading form;
- You discuss the project plan and the deadlines for the first and final version;
- You plan your third moment of contact.
During the third moment of contact:
- You discuss the first version;
- You plan your fourth moment of contact.
During the fourth contact moment:
- You discuss the grade;
- You fill in the testimonial.
