Aims
The course contributes to the following learning outcomes of the Master's in Biology programme:

The student is
  1. Capable, based on broad and up-to-date knowledge of biological and/or biomedical processes, in combination with specialist knowledge (theories, methods, techniques) and research experience in at least one sub-area of this field, of setting up and conducting research aimed at acquiring new knowledge and insight in this research area
  2. Capable of formulating new questions and hypotheses in the biological/ biomedical field, and familiar with the research methods and state-of-the-art techniques to solve these, taking into account available equipment and resources
  3. Capable of setting up and conducting scientific experiments in an independent manner, including the required controls, of using models and theories to explain the results, and of evaluating the results in terms of well-founded scientific conclusions
  4. Capable of independently identifying, critically reading and comprehending relevant, up-to-date international literature from different disciplines, of discriminating essential from non-essential information, and of integrating new information in their overall view on nature
  5. Capable of using concepts from different organization levels in biology, in combination with those from physics, chemistry and mathematics, to solve a complex biological/biomedical problem at a specific abstraction level
  6. Capable of presenting the results of a research project in written form, in accordance with the standards of an academic article
  7. Capable of independent professional practice whereby, depending on the chosen variant, the emphasis is put on conducting fundamental scientific research (under supervision), or on transferring or applying existing scientific knowledge, thereby taking into account the student’s own competences
  8. Capable of asking adequate questions with a critical and constructive attitude towards analysis and resolving of complex biological and/or biomedical problems
  9. Capable of defending his view and of critically evaluating other views in a scientific discussion
  10. Capable of presenting and discussing the results of a research project in the form of an oral presentation for experts and colleague students
  11. Capable of working in or leading a project team, including the making of plans, the distribution of tasks, the integration of sub-projects and the joint evaluation of results
  12. Capable of integrating ethical aspects in his professional practice, along with the ability to reflect on the potential implications for society
  13. Capable, through self-reflection and discussion with others, of assessing their own performance and possibilities on the labour market.

General information
Please note: for the specialisation TWM, other guidelines apply.

Completing an internship is very different from completing courses. You will have to make arrangements for your internship yourself. Based on your personal preferences you will have to make choices. These choices may be new for you and in this section we provide information that might be helpful.

Start by finding a research group within your field of research. You must choose at least one department from the list of departments belonging to your specialization (see under topics). Otherwise, you may select a different department at Radboud University of Radboudumc, or choose to do an external internship (see below).

When you are considering a certain internship, you write a letter of application to a staff member of the department. Sometimes somebody is specified as the contact of the department. This may be the head of department or one of the scientific staff members. Please do not hesitate to contact them. These people will not feel bothered by you; on the contrary, they will be flattered that you are interested in their research! They are specialists in their field and qualified to inform you about the possibilities at their own department or more broadly within their specialism.

Once you have chosen a certain internship, please register for your internship as explained in the document “registration procedure” and make the adequate arrangements with your future first evaluator and daily supervisor (when applicable). Discuss all the aspects of importance for your internship. The document “preliminaries” will be helpful in this discussion.

Grading is done digitally. The “evaluation forms” are also available in a printable version that can be used to see what you will be evaluated on. Please note, that you need a second evaluator, who will grade your report, too. You can ask any examiner authorized by the Examination Board of Biosciences.

External Internship
When you complete an internship outside the Radboud University or Radboudumc, it is an external internship. Just as with an internal internship, you will need an examiner authorized by the Examination Board of Biosciences to act as your first evaluator, and a second one to act as the second evaluator. The external internship needs to be approved by the Examination Board of Biosciences before the start. This approval can be given by the internal examiner on behalf of the Examination Board. We urge you to discuss this with your internship coordinator in an early stage. In general, your plans for going abroad can best start with an appointment with the International coordinator of the Master Biology mrs. C. Mooren, c.mooren@science.ru.nl
You can meet with your internship coordinator for general information and the details of planning. Perhaps you like to complete an internship outside Nijmegen or even abroad.
