Aims
After the completion of the Field Research Course (Ireland):

1. You are able to deduce the most relevant processes in Ireland’s ecosystems (peatlands, machair, softwater lakes, rocky shores, temperate rainforest).
  • By identifying driving processes (geological, biogeochemical and ecological) in these ecosystems.
  • By investigating the driving ecological and biogeochemical processes and their interactions in a study system of your choice, through field observations.
2. You are able to design your own research project focusing on ecosystem processes and interactions in an ecosystem of your choice.
  • You compose relevant research questions and hypotheses, based on literature study and field observations.
  • You design experiments and field-sampling in such a way that your research questions can be answered and your hypotheses can be tested.
  • You report on the background, relevance and approach of your research project in a brief research proposal.
3. You are able to execute your research project in practice. During your research project:
  • You correctly use the necessary research equipment and methodologies.
  • You use the correct statistical tests and are able to interpret the results.
  • You report and present your research project to your peers in a succinct and comprehensive way.
Content
The Field research course (Ireland) is taught once every two years by the Department of Aquatic Ecology & Environmental Biology (IWWR, FNWI). This intensive field research course starts (June 22nd) with a 4-day preparation period consisting of a series of introductory lectures and the writing of a research proposal. The following 8-9 days will be in Connemara, Ireland, where you will join excursions and perform your own research project in a small group based upon the proposal that you have written earlier. In the last days you will analyze and present your results in a report and a presentation (July 10th).
Level

Presumed foreknowledge
Bachelor in biology; preferably with courses Applied Ecology (Toegepaste Ecologie) and Systems Ecology (Systeem Ecologie).
Test information
Due to corona:
Final grade based on proposal 30%, Report 40%, Presentation 20%, Method movie 10%

---------------------------------------

  • proposal, counts for 30%, minimum grade 5.0
  • report, counts for 30%, minimum grade 5.0
  • presentation, counts for 20%, minimum grade 5.0
  • field exam, counts for 20%, minimum grade 5.0
Specifics
Due to logistics, there is only a limited number of spaces (~20) available and you will therefore have to apply. If you would like to participate, please send a short motivation letter and cv to Annelies Veraart (a.veraart@science.ru.nl) before 31-12-2019. The course requires a financial contribution of around 400 euro pp.
