Inhoud
The course has both a pragmatic and a philosophic nature. In terms of pragmatics, it focuses on presentation skills and writing skills for scientific journalism. In terms of analytics, the course is a crash course in media studies, philosophy of representation and the role of image and metaphor in guiding societal interpretation of science. The course thus consists of two parts:
  1. An introduction to the study of representations of science in the media. On the basis of various theoretical tools (semiotics, metaphor analysis, media studies, analysis of image and representation, etc.) we will look at the distinction between implicit and explicit messages (connotation/denotation) in the way science and technology are represented in the public arena (newspapers, internet, television, documentaries, commercials etc.). We will study classic and new approaches of the way sciences is represented in the media (both qua text and qua image). While studying a series of (partially self-identified) examples, students will get acquainted with different methodological alternatives for researching how media represent scientific expertise.
  2. A training in media-oriented writing (science journalism), which will address both the process of writing itself and the broader considerations involved (both strategical and ethical) in the process of transmitting information from the academic to the public arena
