The course's main objective is to offer students the knowledge and skills needed to produce and edit a good academic text in English.
Specific learning objectives: On completion of the course:
  • You will be able to independently plan and write a paper in English
  • You will know how to structure a flowing, coherent text which presents a clear scientific story
  • You will understand how to construct logical paragraphs and make use of other coherence devices to make your arguments clear
  • You will be able to recognise, correct or avoid a number of common problems related to sentence structure and punctuate your texts correctly
  • You will be able to correct and avoid a number of common grammatical mistakes and use suitable scientific vocabulary for your field
  • You will be able to write in a style which is appropriate for the task and your field and make choices about style which improve the readability of your texts
  • You will feel more confident about your writing skills and have a more efficient writing process
Scientific Writing for Master's Students is intended for students in the writing stage of their research or those who have already written texts in English that they would like to improve.

Using the online course book GOALS, you will be introduced to different aspects of scientific writing such as style, text and sentence structure, linking and punctuation, and language features of different paper sections and types of scientific articles.  Tasks are based on published scientific articles to give authentic examples of writing in a range of scientific fields. In tutorials, these topics will be probed in more detail, and the lecturer will develop tasks based on the issues emerging from the group's texts. You will also be asked to submit parts of your own text three times for peer and teacher feedback and learn how and how to edit your own and other people's work.

Ideally, participants should actually be writing their thesis or internship report during the course.

However, students are welcome to enroll if they have already written texts in English for their bachelor's programme or if they would like to use the course as motivation to start drafting scientific texts for their master's programme.

Native speakers of English are also welcome.
No final exam. Grade based on required attendance, active participation and completion of both the independent study and writing assignments.
This course is scheduled six times during the year - three groups in each semester. Courses consist of 6 sessions on alternating weeks, and each course runs over 2 study blocks (i.e. Block 1 & 2 OR Block 3 &4). Please examine the schedule (SWS/Persoonlijk rooster). If fewer than 10 students participate, the course will be cancelled. There is a maximimum of 15 participants per group. If this maximum is reached, you'll be placed on an waiting list. Please note that placement on this waiting list does not mean you are automatically subscribed for the next course! You have to actively subscribe yourself again.
