Aims
At the end of the course you will be able to:
  1. construct and use equations to describe motions in 1 and 2 dimensions
  2. analyze forces and apply Newton's laws
  3. understand the basic principles of a harmonic oscillator
  4. understand and apply the concepts of momentum and energy
  5. apply conservation laws
Content
In this course we will discuss how things move (and why!) and how to describe this mathematically. In some more detail, we will cover the following topics:
  • Motion in one dimension; velocity, acceleration
  • Motion in two dimensions; projectile motion, circular motion
  • Newton's laws; concept of force, reference frames, mass and weight, force analysis, resistive and friction forces
  • Basic oscillatory motion; spring-mass system, pendulum
  • Work, kinetic and potential energy; (non-) isolated systems, conservation of energy
  • Linear momentum, conservation of momentum
Instructional modes:

This course consists of weekly lectures and tutorials with homework assignments, as well as question hours. You are also expected to spend time on self-study to repeat the material at home.

This is a course in the theme 'Physics and mathematics'. High-school level physics and math knowledge are required.
