Aims

After this course you can:

  • calculate with real numbers, fractions, powers, roots, functions (goniometric, exponential, logarithmic), equations, angles, matrices and vectors
  • differentiate real functions in one or more variables
  • work with concepts like gradient vectors, directional derivatives and total differentials
  • apply differential calculus in calculating extreme values, limits and local approximations
Content

In Mathematics 1 we expand Secondary School Mathematics with emphasis on differerential calculus in one or several variables

Literature
Obligatory:

• Mathematics 1, Wim Gielen 2015, available on Blackboard August, 2017
Recommended:

• Calculus, Wim Gielen 2013, available in August as a booklet and as a free pdf-file on Blackboard

Teaching formats

• 14 hours lecture
• 14 hours problem session
• 56 hours individual study period
Extra information teaching methods: Part of this course are two digital tests on math skills.

Topics
• Calculation Techniques
• Matrices and Vectors
• Sequences and Limits
• Functions
• Differentiation
• Extreme Values
• Partial derivatives

Test information
There will be three intermediate tests and a written exam.

Prerequisites
This is a course in the theme `Physics and Mathematics'.Starting point is Secondary School Mathematics, incidental gaps will be filled during the course. During the first week a diagnostic computer test will be organized, following that test a special booklet 'Calculus' is available to repair gaps in basic calculation techniques.
