After this course, you are able to:
- distinguish several basic reaction types and use this knowledge on straightforward substitution and elimination reactions
- apply the knowledge to simple reactions in which conformations and stereochemistry play a role
- produce reaction mechanisms of substitution and elimination reactions
- evaluate rate laws that govern the course of chemical reactions and apply this knowledge in solving rate laws for straightforward substitution and elimination reactions

In this course the following basic reaction mechanisms will be discussed: substitution, elimination and addition reactions onto unsaturated compounds. Emphasis will be on recognition of the type of reaction, the stereochemical aspects and insight in parameters that influence the progress and rate of a reaction. Attention will be paid to the fundamentals of reaction kinetics, such as the definition of reaction rates and order of reactions and concentration effects. Steady-state approximation, activation energy, Arrhenius plot and catalysis are subjects that will be discussed. |
