Cursusdoelen
The student finishing this course
  • can explain the electrostatic forces that arise between charged objects and knows the difference between electric field and potential,
  • can solve simple problems in electrostatics using Coulomb's Law and Gauss's Law
  • can explain how capacitors store charge and energy and what dielectrics are,
  • can determine the electric currents is simple circuits containing resistors, batteries (EMFs) and capacitors by applying the laws of Ohm and of Kirchhoff.
Inhoud

This course introduces the basic concepts of electrostatics and DC electric circuits. The student is familiarized with the concepts of electric force, electric field and potential. In a more qualitative fashion, the importance of electrostatics in (physical) chemistry is discussed. Then, we discuss the flow of electric current through simple electric circuits of resistors, capacitors and batteries and how simple circuit diagrams are analyzed.
