Aims
After this lab course you are able to:
  • apply your theoretical knowledge of crystal growth on the crystallization of solids
  • to prepare and perform a practical assignment in a systematic way
  • show a crytical attitude towards techniques that are applied and the accuracy of measurements and systematic errors involved
  • to write a clear and coherent report from each experiment
Content
Prior to the lab, a few lectures introduce the students to the relevance of crystal growth and to the requirements for the lab reports.
During the lab course students in pairs perform practical assignments in the area of crystal growth and its application.
The assignments are more complex than first year exeperiments and require more indenpendence. Also the requirments for the written reports are more strict.
Topics are:
  • Crystals: defects, dendrites, and fractals
  • Shadowgraphy on growing crystals
  • The solar cell
  • Chemical gas phase deposition of diamond
Additional comments
Registration for this course 1 month in advance.
There are 16 positions available. If more students are interested, a waiting list will be installed and selection will be based on motivation.

Test information
After each of the four lab assignments a report is made and graded. The average of four grades yields the final grade. An insufficient grade can be remediated by executing one additional experiment to replace the lowest-rated one.

Prerequisites
• Microscopic techniques (NWI-MOL045)
• Programming in Matlab (NWI-MOL033)
• Crystal structure (NWI-MOL032)

This is a course in the theme 'Lab and research skills'.
