Aims

After this course you are able to:

  • recognize and discuss the structure and several properties of crystals, and is able to analyze crystal bonding, lattice vibrations and the electronic structure in a quantitative manner
  • if required, use the concept of reciprocal space to perform such an analysis
Content

This course is based on the collective behaviour of the atoms and molecules of solids, i.e., the properties individual molecules are not important. Both the geometric and electronic structure of materials will be treated.

Topics
• crystal structure
• reciprocal space
• crystal binding
• phonons
• free electron model
• band structure
