Aims
  • The student understands the quantum mechanical description of atoms and small molecules
  • The student knows the theoretical background of spectroscopy and is able to interpret spectra
  • The student knows how to use IR spectroscopy to obtain structural information
  • The student can correlate the molecular parameters to observed spectroscopic parameters such as transition frequencies and intensities.
Content
The course Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy provides insight how fundamental quantum mechanical properties lead to molecular structures and how (optical) spectroscopy can be used to investigate these proporties. This course discusses the quantum mechanical description of atoms, molecules and their interaction with electromagnetic radiation (light). The obtained knowledge allows to understand and relate the observed spectroscopic quantities such as energy levels, transition probabilities and intensities. Modern spectroscopic techniques and use of lasers will be discussed, and illustrated with research examples.
Topics
• Introduction into spectroscopy: absorption and emission of radiation
• Rotational, vibrational and electronic transitions
• Spectroscopic techniques to elucidate structure of atoms, diatoms, and molecules
• Lasers
• Relationship structure - spectroscopic signatures
