After this course, you are able to:
- predict and categorize different configurations and conformations of molecules, both in chain and ring systems
- name organic structures properly (structural and secondary nomenclature) and draw structures in two- and three-dimensional representations
- deduce the reaction mechanism of hydrohalogenation reactions
- interpret and predict the IR, NMR and MS spectra of simple organic molecules

In this course the structure of organic molecules is discussed. What determines the molecular structure? How can it be manipulated? What do molecules look like in three dimensions? How can you determine the structure of organic compounds using advanced spectroscopic and spectrometric methods? These questions form the basis of organic chemistry and this course and this course discusses many of the crucial concepts necessary for understanding chemical reactions in subsequent courses. |
