After this course you are acquainted with working on a chemical lab and you are able to individually:
  • use volumetric glassware and analytical balances to make solutions of known concentration in a precise and accurate way.  
  • design and quantitatively perform a simple calibration experiment.   
  • employ UV-VIS spectrometers for measuring spectra and for quantitative experiments. 
  • perform basic liquid chromatography and / or gel electrophoresis experiments.  
  • critically interpret the results of simple quantitative chemical experiments using the appropriate statistical methods.
  • choose an appropriate analysis technique to solve a basic analytical (chemical) problem.
This practical course is aimed at strengthening, applying and extending the knowledge of quantitative chemical analysis techniques obtained in high school and corresponding to the theory discussed in MOL121 - Chemical Analysis 1. This course serves as a start for acquiring the laboratory skills of a molecular scientist. At the beginning of the course, the focus wil be on attaining a number of basic skills (weighing, pipetting, titration, making a dilution series, etc.). During the course, these skills will be applied in experiments of one day in which simple chemical analyses are conducted. Apart from that, much attention will be given to preparing experiments, record-keeping in laboratory notebooks, error analyses and - importantly - knowledge of safety rules. The latter will be tested in a digital test at the beginning of the course.

Instructional Modes
Practicum, supported by digital tools

  • Chemistry at the level of Dutch pre-university secondary education ('VWO') or comparable, both in terms of knowledge and skills.
  • A sufficient proficiency in English (spoken and written).

    Safety test: At the beginning of the course, you are required to have familiarized yourself with the safety rules and guidelines that are detailed in the laboratory manual and in the safety lecture in the first week. This will be tested in a digital safety test. Failing this test and the resit means you are prohibited from being in the lab. The final assessment of the course is based on:
    • the quality of your preparations, judged from your written preparation forms, and brief oral discussions thereof;
    • your performance (practical skills, attitude and adherence to lab rules);
    • the quality and punctuality of registration and interpretation of experimental results in your lab notebook;
    • a number of written report sections and a full report (Q3 only);
    • the results you obtain in the final practical assessment, the so-called 'aptitude test'.
    Grading is on a scale of 1 to 10. The final grade is rounded to the nearest half, with the exception of grades between 5.0 and 6.0 which are rounded to the nearest integer. Grades of 6 and higher are considered a 'pass' and grades lower than 6 are considered a 'fail'. The sub-grade for practical skills and rule adherence must be 5.5000... or higher. A lower grade means that the final grade for the entire course will not be higher than 5.
    You are obliged to:
    • hand in / have handed in a good digital passport photo of yourself on the first day of the lab course, if one is not (yet) available from Osiris or if the quality of the Osiris photo is too low. Handing in the photo will be facilitated by the education institute;
    • hand in / have handed in a debit mandate for broken or missing glassware and other equipment. The debit mandate will be provided by the education institute; handing it in will be facilitated by the education institute.
    • possess a durable laboratory notebook (bound and with a hard cover; can be bought via the education institute);
    • possess a white labcoat made of 100% cotton (can be bought via the education institute);
    • possess proper safety glasses (can be bought via the education institute);
    • possess a dish cloth / tea towel for drying glassware (can be bought via the education institute).
