Cursusdoelen
At the end of this course, you are expected to be able to:
  • Independently and safely design, plan and execute basic physical-organic chemistry experiments based on relevant literature and protocols.
  • Plan and execute a small research project in teams that involves method development, testing and evaluation, synthesis, systematic investigation and data analysis.
  • Anticipate the knowledge and skills that are required in research projects, identify possible ways to acquire these, and design a strategy to prepare for a research project.
  • Critically evaluate your data
  • Discuss intermediate results and adapt a research plan.
  • Present and discuss results of the research project at the first-year closing symposium.
Inhoud

In addition to synthesizing molecules, another important skill that you need to acquire as a molecular scientist is to develop strategies to unravel how these molecules form molecular systems, where different types of molecules interact or interconvert. 

The lab course starts off with a number of basic, one-day experiments, that will teach you a number of key strategies to study molecular complexation, molecular aggregation, electrochemistry and reaction kinetics. The course ends with a small research project where you will further elaborate on one of the topics that was covered in the basic experiments.
