Aims
Upon completion of the course, the student is able to:
  • Synthesize and characterize molecules using advanced experimental techniques.
  • Plan, understand and correctly carry out a synthetic protocol; properly record execution and results in a laboratory notebook.
  • Report on experimental outcome in a concise manner, according to academic standards.
Content

This lab-course is a continuation on synthesis lab1 and is a next step in acquiring an academic attitude to scientific experimentation. During this course you will improve your knowledge on the techniques used in synthetic chemistry. The focus of this course is to expand your ‘chemical toolbox’ with new techniques building on the knowledge of the first year lab-courses. The experiments covered in this lab-course show synthetic chemistry in the broadest sense covering different topics such as coordination chemistry, bio-inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, chemical biology, and catalysis. During this course students have to select and plan their experiments themselves to comply with a predefined set of goals. They are challenged to apply their theoretical knowledge about organic and (bio)inorganic chemistry in the lab. Besides new experimental techniques, students will also get acquainted new analytical techniques and forms of spectroscopy to characterize their products.
Level
Second year bachelor
Presumed foreknowledge
Theory:
  • Organic Chemistry 1 (NWI-MOL124)
  • Organic Chemistry 2 (NWI-MOL161)
  • Inorganic Chemistry 1 (NWI-MOL162) or Inorganic Biochemistry (NWI-MOL105)
Lab courses:
  • Synthesis lab 1a (NWI-MOL125)
  • Synthesis lab 1b (NWI-MOL126)
The above lab courses need to be finished with a passing grade.

Test information
  • Students need to pass the digital safety test at the start of the course in order to be admitted to the laboratory.
  • Students are assessed during the course on their practical skills, theoretical knowledge, planning, and reporting.
Specifics
The registration for this course and the corresponding 'tests' closes four weeks before the start of the course.
