Aims
Independent interpretation and evaluation of NMR in terms of molecular structure for organic molecules, and of IR, UV-vis, and mass spectra for bio- and organic molecules; independent planning of strategy for purification of bio- and organic molecules by chromatography.
Content
Important techniques for the characterization of compounds by instrumental analysis are treated. The emphasis is on nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) of organic compounds and mass spectrometry of bio- and organic molecules. Furthermore infrared (IR) and ultraviolet/visible light (UV/vis) spectroscopy as well as chromatography is treated.

Teaching formats
• 16 hours lecture
• 16 hours problem session
• 52 hours individual study period

Test information
Written examination: 90/100 points.
Assignment/presentation of advanced and/or combined spectroscopic problem: 10/100 points.

Prerequisites
Organic chemistry (NWI-MOL095), Magnetic resonance (recommended) (NWI-MOL057). This is a mandatory course in the specialisation 'Chemistry for Life' and 'Molecular chemistry'.
