Aims
Independent interpretation and evaluation of NMR in terms of molecular structure for organic molecules, and of IR, UV-vis, and mass spectra for bio- and organic molecules; independent planning of strategy for purification of bio- and organic molecules by chromatography.
Content
Important techniques for the characterization of compounds by instrumental analysis are treated. The emphasis is on nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) of organic compounds and mass spectrometry of bio- and organic molecules. Furthermore infrared (IR) and ultraviolet/visible light (UV/vis) spectroscopy as well as chromatography is treated.
Level

Presumed foreknowledge
Organic chemistry (NWI-MOL095), Magnetic resonance (recommended) (NWI-MOL057) or Magnetic Resonance in Chemistry (NWI-MOL108). This is a mandatory course in the specialisation 'Chemistry for Life' and 'Molecular chemistry'.
Test information
Written examination: 100/100 points. Workshops and assignments will be given on a weekly basis for preparation of the exam but will not be graded.
