Aims
Independent interpretation and evaluation of NMR in terms of molecular structure for organic molecules, and of IR, UV-vis, and mass spectra for bio- and organic molecules; independent planning of strategy for purification of bio- and organic molecules by chromatography.
Content
Important techniques for the characterization of compounds by instrumental analysis are treated. The emphasis is on nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) of organic compounds and mass spectrometry of bio- and organic molecules. Furthermore infrared (IR) and ultraviolet/visible light (UV/vis) spectroscopy as well as chromatography is treated.

Instructional Modes
Level

Presumed foreknowledge
Organic chemistry (NWI-MOL095), Magnetic resonance (recommended) (NWI-MOL057) or Magnetic Resonance in Chemistry (NWI-MOL108). This is a mandatory course in the specialisation 'Chemistry of Life' and 'Molecular chemistry'.
Test information
The exam is performed digitally on the CIRRUS platform. Students will have an opportunity to learn the platform during a practice exam period set before the exam date. By the time of the exam, students are strongly encouraged to be comfortable with MestreNova and Chemdraw as those software packages will be necessary to answer some questions.
