Cursusdoelen
After completing the course, the student is able to:
  • evaluate the materials science research within the IMM
  • explain and apply concepts in materials science using the theory as presented in the course
  • interpret the scientific literature in the area of materials science using concepts and theory as presented in the course
  • reduce the information from the scientific literature on materials science to the core problems
  • solve these core problems using the presented theory and concepts or can present a different solution method
Inhoud
The mission of the Institute of Molecules and Materials (IMM) is to conduct research and to train students in the design, study, and manipulation of properties of functional molecules and materials. In this course we discuss the rational design, preparation, characterization, properties, and applications of various materials, such as supramolecular compounds, (micro)crystalline and magnetic materials, thin films, polymers and liquid crystals.
Understanding of the intermolecular interactions of materials and their relationship to their macroscopic properties and functionality is the key concept of this master course. The main goal is to link microscopic structure to macroscopic properties, such as mechanical, electrical, chemical, optical, and magnetic properties. Methods for the analysis of various materials will be discussed, with particular attention for recent developments in materials science within the IMM.

Instructional Modes
Niveau

Voorkennis
This is a mandatory course in the specialisation 'Physical chemistry'.
Toetsinformatie
On the basis of primary literature the students have to give a presentation in which they summarize and highlight the essence of a publication on a materials science subject. The presentation will contribute 40% to the final grade together with a written exam which contributes 60% to the final grade. The minimum (separate) score for the presentation as well as the written exam is 5.5. The score for the presentation is only valid during the current academic year.
