Cursusdoelen
  • The student will have aquired knowledge of the basic crystal lattices and the concept of the reciprocal lattice.
  • The student will understand the basic properties of lattice vibrations in solids and be able to perform simple calculations of the phonon dispersion relation, the phonon density of states and the thermal properties of crystals.
  • The student will understand the basic properties of electrons in solids and can perform simple calculations of the electronic band structure, the electronic density of states and the electronic conduction.
  • The student will be acquainted with the quantum mechanical description of solids and their classification in metals, insulators and semiconductors.
Inhoud
This course is the introductory course to solid state physics in the Bachelor. It will set the foundation for the more advanced elective solid state courses "Electronic Properties of Solids  (3rd year, 1st quarter; NWI-NB067D) and "Modern Topics in Condensed Matter Physics" (3rd year, 2nd quarter; NWI-NB052C), which all together form a lecture series that prepares you ideally for a planned internship (Bachelorstage) in this field of research.

Description:
  • crystal structure, crystal lattices, (primitive) unit vectors and unit cell
  • chemical bonding
  • concept of the reciprocal lattice, diffraction (Bragg and von Laue), Brillouin zones, structure and form factor
  • lattice vibrations - phonons, mono- and diatomic unit cells, thermal properties of solids
  • electronic properties of solids, free electron Fermi gas, concept of the density of states
  • the concept of band structure (Bloch functions, free electron gas, quasi-free electron approximation and tight-binding approximation), band structure for metals, semi-metals, semiconductors and insulators
  • basics of semiconductors (intrinsic semiconductors and the concept of doping)
