After completing this course, the student should:

  • know and qualitatively understand the physics at the nanoscale and size quantization
  • be able to describe the electronic and optical properties of metals, semiconductors and insulators
  • understand the basic properties of semiconductor devices such as solar cells, lasers and transistors
  • be aware and understand processes for micro- and nanofabrication
  • be aware of the main breakthroughs of condensed matter physics in the 20th century
  • know about and be aware of research activities in ‘quantum matter’ at the Institute of Molecules and Materials, and FELIX/HFML
Students will also give a short presentation on a topic related to the course either individually or as group work.
 
Inhoud
Nanoscience and quantum technology, introduced more than half a century ago, is an active research area with both novel science and fundamental applications that has gradually established itself in the past decades.

The overall goal of this course is to give Physics & Astronomy students an introduction into the basic ideas necessary to understand and to apply entirely new effects occurring on the nanometre scale. We will deal with new physical concepts and discuss consequences for future nanotechnology.

This elective is the first course in a trajectory of electives towards the Master ‘Physics of Molecules and Materials’ with the focus on quantum matter.
