Aims
After completing the course the student will be able to:
  • Understand the most important polymer chemistry definitions and methodologies, of which synthesis and molecular aspects will receive most attention.
  • Relate polymerization mechanism to polymer properties.
  • Become familiar with recent trends in polymer chemistry, with the aid of special topics
Content
The course Polymer Chemistry will give insight in the chemical aspects of polymer science. Basic knowledge about polymerization mechanisms and polymer properties is combined with state of the art developments in this multidisciplinary field of science. The course is structured around 4 themes:
  1. Controlled chain polymerization. This includes free radical polymerization, ionic polymerization and controlled radical polymerization techniques
  2. Step polymerization. This includes traditional polycondensation chemistry (preparation of polyester and polyamides) and supramolecular polymerization
  3. Stereoselective polymerization. This includes coordination polymerization, such as Ziegler Natta chemistry, and biosynthesized polymers, such as proteins
  4. Conjugated polymers. This includes both the synthesis and application of these materials in devices such as solar cells
Furthermore, case studies on the application of polymeric materials will be discussed based on the recent literature.
