Aims
As a student in this course, you will:
  • learn the most important general purpose skills for any academic or professional: public speaking, writing, critical thinking, time management, effective collaboration, giving and receiving feedback.
  • reflect on your characteristics, skills and preferences and on the job market to build the basis of your own career path.
  • get and give support and advice about the study program, to make it better for you and everyone else.
  • get a broad introduction into important AI topics, academia and the professional work field.
Content
As an AI-student, after your study, you have many job options to pick from. You can go and start your own company, can become a scientist at the university (i.e. ‘Academia’), researcher at a company, a programming at an IT company, etc. etc. All these jobs have one thing in common: they will require you to present your work, in writing and/or speaking, you will have to work together, you will need to plan your time, set your goals, do critical thinking and give and receive feedback. That is also what will be doing in this course, surrounding the topic we all love most: AI. Along the way, you will also get an introduction into what AI is, what your options are, and work on your own career path. Lastly, you will reflect on the study program, give us feedback, and give and receive advice on your study path. All to help you have a great start of your time at the university and of your career as an AI-academic or –professional.

The course consists of:
- AI introduction lectures, where you get introduced to important topics in AI, to academia and to the professional work field.
- Skill lectures, giving you guidance in developing your skills.
- Skill meetings, where you practice your skills, give and receive feedback on your and others’ work and the program. These meetings are guided by your mentor, a second year student, who will support you throughout your first year.
- Writing and public speaking assignments.
