Content
Course content
This course covers theories, questions and themes that are central to the field of culture within communication science. Within the field of culture, we analyze the content of mediated entertainment messages and study its potential uses and consequences from the perspective of the individual user as well as from the vantage point of the societal and cultural context. The central idea is that media function (with)in and for a community: society at large as well as the various subcultures within. Media-content – in this course specifically mediated entertainment content - is seen as the reflection of a society and as one of the most important binding forces in a community.

Within this course the media will be discussed in the context of contemporary societal issues. We will, for example, discuss what role the various media forms play as a symbolic source that helps in creating and maintaining a subcultural identity, the role the media play in the construction of images about minorities, the use of popular culture in political participation and the cultural lessons that are communicated by various media-contents.

During the course, you will attend interactive lectures and working groups. The lectures, coupled with the literature, will provide theoretical and thematic insights into the field of culture in communication science. These theoretical insights are directly applied to contemporary societal and professional cases in the working groups. The final grade is based on group assignments and an individual final exam.
