Cursusdoelen
After successfully completing the course Social Media Literacy, you are able to:
  • explain the concept of social media literacy and to provide insight into empirical findings regarding specific cases of social media literacy
  • apply theories and empirical findings regarding social media literacy in assignments that mirror real-world activities
  • critically reflect on both the process and content of the (group) assignments
Inhoud

The central question in the course on social media literacy is how we can empower people to access, analyze, evaluate, and create social media content in a responsible way. We will particularly focus on the more practical application of insights derived from theory and empirical studies. After exploring what social media literacy is, we will focus on specific cases in this domain. For example, we will investigate how vulnerable groups can become more resilient to potentially harmful effects of social media, how we can train people to recognize fake news, and how schools can intervene when it comes to cyberbullying behavior.

We meet once a week in a 4-hour meeting. Each meeting starts with a lecture on the topic of that week. In the second part of the meeting, students work in groups on the assignment of that week. Lecturers are present to help students, to answer questions and to provide feedback. Students will finish the weekly assignment after the meeting. The last meeting (week 7) consists of presentations by students (as part of the fifth assignment).

Niveau
We recommend students to follow the minor course 'Risks and Opportunities of Social Media - SOW-CWB3053' before participating in the social media literacy course.
Voorkennis
Bachelor students Communication Science must have obtained 42 EC from B1. This course has limited accessibility for students from other study programmes and international students. We refer students from other study programmes to the admission requirements for B2 and B3 elective courses in this study guide under the heading Students from other study programmes.
Toetsinformatie
The course consists of weekly assignments (5 in total), which will all be graded on a scale from 1-10. All assignments have to be sufficient (5.5 or higher). Assignments will be conducted in groups. As we start with each assignment during the weekly meeting, students who are not present have to do the assignment for that week individually.
