Cursusdoelen
Upon completion of this course:
  • You are familiar with various criteria for qualifying knowledge as scientific knowledge.
  • You can adequately use important terminology from philosophy of science.
  • You can evaluate the scientific status of the formation of psychological theories.
  • In psychological debates, you can identify the philosophical theories or presuppositions on which theories and experimental set-ups are based.
  • You can examine experimental design in order to deduce which conceptual assumptions the researcher is using.
  • You can formulate your theoretical assumptions, verbally and written, in accurate and concise form.
Inhoud
This course focuses on philosophical questions and concepts that affect theorizing in psychology and the interpretation of psychological experiments. The first three lectures will discuss the history of the so-called ‘mind-body problem’—outlining a number of rather different ways of thinking about the relation between mind, brain and behaviour. In the fourth and fifth lecture we will discuss examples of psychological experimenting and theorizing that cannot do without further philosophical reflection of the concepts used. Lectures six and seven focus on the philosophy of science with specific emphasis on psychology. What distinguishes science from pseudo-science? And how does scientific theorizing develop?
