Inhoud
This course focuses on the causes, functions and consequences of both acute and chronic pain. Detailed attention is paid to the role of biological, cognitive and socio-cultural aspects in both acute and chronic pain.

The lecturers have backgrounds in medicine, biological, clinical and experimental psychology, neuropsychology, and physical therapy. It will become clear that these specialist fields are integrated in the description of pain and pain perception.

Themes that come up include the neuroanatomy of pain and Melzack's gate control theory, acute pain versus chronic pain, learning theories on the description of pain perception, pain in aging, pharmacological and psychological treatment of pain, and the association between emotion, cognition and pain.

Participants in the key theme Pain Perception and Treatment will perform a literature search to develop a study proposal focusing on a relevant topic in pain research. They will present this proposal in the form of a poster to their fellow students and the coordinators of this course. Students will also actively participate in discussions, for example based on one of the presentations of their fellow students.
