Cursusdoelen
At the end of the course:
  1. You will have insight into the epidemiology of internet use and social media platforms and current developments.
  2. You can describe the main psychological theoretical models, concepts and mechanisms in the field of digital environments and social media in your own words and use them to analyze examples.
  3. You can describe when frequent use of online and offline technology goes awry, and the potential role of context in this process. Moreover, you are capable of potential ways to mitigate this.
  4. You can describe what happens on a neuro-cognitive level when you use online and offline technology, and how this may affect your brain.
  5. You understand how interactive technology can be used to train and study various aspects of cognition, such as attention, memory, and perception.
  6. You will have insight into how decision making takes place online and how we are affected by what see.
  7. You can describe the different considerations people make in choosing a particular platform.
Inhoud
  1. In the first part you will gain insight into the contemporary epidemiology of internet use and its primary social media platforms for different age groups, and how it fits different psychological stages.
  2. In a second part of this course, we will take a more behavioural perspective and concentrate on different stages of use, when frequent use morphs into dependence and addiction, and the role of different environmental key players in development of use (such as peers and parents). Specifically, we will go into the role peers have in stimulating of problematic use (e.g., by means of deviancy training), and the role parents can have in preventing problematic use. We will also focus on the potential of applying some general principles of modern technology (e.g., use of VR and smart games in therapy).
  3. In the third part, you will learn about the cognitive neuroscience of humans interacting with technology and social media. We will discuss the role of cognitive and neural processes during the use of online and offline technology (e.g., gaming, internet, social media), but also how the extensive use of such technology subsequently influences cognition and the (developing) brain. Finally, we will see how virtual and augmented reality can be used to study cognitive and neural systems in an ecologically valid manner.
  4. In the fourth part, we will study how people make decisions online, and how those decisions are influenced by designs of websites and interfaces, for example in the case of cookie permissions. We will also look at how people make choices between different possible platforms that can be used to achieve online goals (e.g. social media, file sharing, videoconferencing), and how values such as privacy influence those choices.
